MegaFon Owns Every 1 in 3 Base Stations in Russia

UrBC, Moscow, April 25, 2019. The number of telecom facilities run by Russia’s Big4 ISPs rose by 3% since the start of the year. There are currently 719,282 base stations in Russia that are in charge of reliable Internet and mobile connection for the local users, Roskomnadzor’s press service reports.

According to Roskomnadzor’s radio frequency service, MegaFon runs the country’s largest network at the moment. The telecom company owns 232,055 base stations at the moment (33% of all the stations active in Russia). This is, in fact, 2% more than one year earlier. MTS owns 180,068 base stations, T2 Mobile owns 156,972 stations, and VimpelCom owns 150,187 base stations.

The telecom companies are focusing on the 4G network now, with the number of LTE-supporting stations going up by 6% compared with the start of the year. The number of stations that support the third-generation standard IMT-2000/UMTS and the second-generation GSM one increased by 1% as well.

MegaFon follows the general market trend: ‘Nine out of ten devices that get bought at MegaFon’s Sverdlovsk Region-based stores support our high-speed LTE standard, while the average amount of traffic a customer uses a month comes to more than 10 Gb (33% more that one year earlier). Our wide network makes it possible to enjoy a very high-speed Internet connection,’ the company’s press service says.
