UrBC, Magnitogorsk, September 22, 2017. Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) won in the International Competition of Scientific, Scientific/Technical, and Innovative Developments Aimed At The Development & Exploration of The Arctic & Continental Shelf 2017, the company press service reports.

102 projects submitted by sixty-eight companies based in Russia, the CIS member states, and Europe took part in the annual contest. The projects were all aimed to promote scientific research and scientific/technical and innovative activity to develop the Russian Arctic.

The judges’ panel, which comprised experts from the Russian Government and the Russian Academy of Sciences, awarded the first prize to MMK’s technology for making cold-resistant steel sheets. In terms of some of their properties, the sheets have no counterparts anywhere in the world at the moment.

MMK Scientific/Technical Center Development Group’s Senior Expert S. Denisov, who coordinated the project’s development, received the contest certificate, a special banner, and honorary badges in Smolny Palace in Saint Petersburg on September 12, 2017.

MMK designers V. Avramenko, S. Gorshkov, S. Denisov, M. Mychak, and P. Stekanov and experts from Kurchatovskiy Institute/Prometey designed and launched a unique Arc-indexed steel sheet-making technology. The new technology has meant MMK could get its rolled sheets made from shipbuilding steel certified for compliance with Arc-indexed steel requirements.
