December 13, 2014. Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) Deputy DG Sergey Laskov and MMK Scientific & Technological Center Chief Manager for Steel-Smelting Oleg Nikolayev were awarded the Russian Federation Government Science & Engineering Prize for development and production of high quality, economically efficient automobile body sheets and for enhancing the Russian metal goods’ competitiveness on the global market, MMK reports.
The team of automobile body sheet designers also comprised representatives of other metallurgical companies, carmakers, and I.P. Bardin Central Scientific Research Institute for Ferrous Metallurgy.
According to Laskov, it was only due to MMK’s newest facilities such as the cold-roll Mill 2000 that it was possible to make the samples of these innovative sheets so that they could be tested by potential customers.
‘The construction of this rolling facility was completed in 2012, and President Vladimir Putin was actually present at the launching ceremony. The Mill 2000 Project was designed and implemented as part of the import replacement program that our government says is the Russian industry’s top priority,’ Laskov said.
