UDMZ, AVL Upgrade Diesel Engine

April 18, 2013. Ural Diesel Engine Plant (UDMZ, a member of Sinara Transport Machines Holding) and Austria-based engineering company AVL completed their project on the upgrades of 8DM-21L diesel engine for locomotives. Prior to signing the documents to close the contract, AVL experts did some final measurements of the diesel’s technical specifications, Sinara Group’s PR Center reports.

The Austrian party’s project manager Gert Koren said the engine fully met the target indicators set out in the 8DM-21L diesel engine upgrade contract. What is more, the plant did not have to stretch the engine to its utmost capacity, quite on the contrary, an impressive reserve has been allowed for. For one, the upgrade resulted in a 5.3% decrease in the specific fuel spending in the nominal mode and in a 7.8% decrease in the partially loaded mode. Nitrogen oxide emissions went down by 36%, the smoke factor dropped by 37.8%, the press release says.

AVL representative also pointed out that these goals were achieved without increasing the peak firing pressure, which means the new engine has a greater resource capacity.

‘The fuel spending parameters we have achieved on this upgraded diesel now meet those of their foreign counterparts,’ Koren noted.
