Yekaterinburg: 1,800 Gas Leaks This Year

30 November 2017 (14:15)

UrBC, Yekaterinburg, November 30, 2017. The number of emergencies relating to gas leaks in Yekaterinburg houses and apartments grew by 20% in the last seven years, owing to an increased number of homes and gas consumers, among other factors, Head of Yekaterinburggaz Emergency Department Ivan Savenko said at a press conference recently.

6,800 emergency calls were made in 2011 and as many as 7,600 this year; 1,800 queries had to do with gas leaks.

‘Calls relating to gas leaks signal the greatest danger of explosions, fires, and destruction. Our rescue teams head for the location immediately and take every step to avoid an emergency. It should be noted that violation of gas consumption safety rules is now the cause of accidents ten times more often than seven years ago. In 2011, only 59 violations were registered; this year, the number is 457,’ he said.

The commonest problems are activated burners left open and an unattended cooker/oven. Besides, some people install gas equipment without authorities’ permission, which often results in accidents.
