October 8, 2014. The construction of an experimental and special-purpose railway vehicles department is now in progress at Uralvagonzavod Corporation’s head plant in Nizhniy Tagil, the corporation’s press service reports.

An up-to-date department will employ 270 workers and will be located at the engineering vehicles building. The department projected launch date is 2016, with expected product output of 750 units a year.

‘There has emerged a large niche for a number of goods, including about ten experimental and special-purpose ones, on the railway carriage market, and it is this niche we need to win. The department will operate in a closed cycle mode and will thus be a mini-plant of sorts. Fully ready carriages will come out of its gates,’ says the new department’s head Alexander Ditenberg.

The department will work on special-purpose rolling stock: carriages with sliding tops, thermally insulated carriages, long-span platforms for transportation of bulk containers, turf-carrying containers, hopper wagons for transportation of steel pellets, dumping carts, and so on. Experimental samples of Uralvagonzavod’s rolling stock will also be produced there.
