MMK to buy less energy, Chairman says

Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) is planning to buy less electric power from its suppliers and support its own electricity production within the framework of its anti-crisis package, the enterprise’s BOD Chairman Viktor Rashnikov said.
MMK’s PR Department reports the company used to be able to fully provide for its electricity needs as recently as a few years ago, but, after a series of new production facilities were launched (including an arc-furnace shop), about 200 megawatts had to be purchased from outside suppliers. Now that the general production output has gone down, MMK’s power plants are producing about 600 megawatts worth of electric power and can cover the plant’s needs by one hundred percent. The plant’s facilities produce all the heat and steam the business needs as well as 60% to 70% of the heat and steam needed in the town of Magnitogorsk.
In addition, MMK is trying to make the resource consumption more efficient through energy-saving measures, particularly in case of a production stoppage or equipment breakdown. A special corporate Energy-Saving Technologies Center keeps monitoring the resource spending.
Finally, MMK is by now fully ready for the winter’s cold: all the boilers and boiler houses as well as turbine generators and pump units have been repaired and set up. About 100,000 tons of coals have been delivered onto the heat power plant – enough to survive the winter beautifully.
