Metallurgical Plant of Nizhnyaya Salda restores city’s only ski stadium

2 April 2007 (10:20)

Metallurgical Plant of Nizhnyaya Salda (part of Metallurgical Industrial Complex of Nizhniy Tagil and of Evraz Group) is restoring the city’s only ski stadium. The stadium has remained unused for six years, despite being located next to a city block and a number of educational establishments. A lot of city dwellers, including 1,500 schoolchildren, sport-practicing adolescents, and vocational school students, used to visit the stadium regularly, so the Veteran Council of Metallurgical Plant of Nizhnyaya Salda and the company’s employees decided to restore the site in January 2007, reports the spokesperson for Evraz Group.

Over the last two months, the workers have cleared 1.5 kilometers of ski track and the clearings from rubbish and brushwood, laid out more trails, and did the new marking. What is more, they have already had some competitions, with the employees and their families as well as the company’s veterans taking part in the event. The plant’s managers competed in the ski race. The total number of contestants and their supporters came to more than 150. The opening ceremony was attended by the plant’s top executives.

Most of the restoration will be completed after the closing of the corporate winter sports championship. The city council has already agreed to support the project, and the dwellers of Nizhnyaya Salda will keep clearing the tracks throughout 2007. Four routes (1.5 kilometers, 3 kilometers, 5 kilometers, and 10 kilometers long) with total length of 20 kilometers are expected to be made altogether, alongside with a ski camp. The project will have been fully finished by the next winter season.
