On October 29, 2006, an air-gas mixture explosion occurred at No. 2 firing house of UralCement JSC located in the village of Korkino. The explosion had been caused by a sudden gas pressure jump that resulted in a gas escape and a gas bolt fracture at the technological gas pipeline.

The explosion destroyed the kiln control center and caused a collapse of the reinforced concrete constructions on area of 2,000 square meters, the spokesperson for Chelyabinsk Region Department of Emergencies said to UrBC representative. At the moment of explosion, 11 company employees were at the firing shop. 10 of them escaped on their own, location and health status of the eleventh person is unknown.

The breakdown elimination was carried out by the local crews of UralCement JSC, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Chelyabinsk Region Department of Emergencies and Rostekhnadzor (112 people and 21 vehicle units altogether). At the moment, a special commission led by the head of Korkino District municipal administration is inspecting the breakdown area. Chelyabinsk Regional search-and-rescue crews alongside with the 12th group of the State Fire Fighting Service keep clearing logjams and searching for the lost person. The explosion caused a break in gas supply; hence the company boiler supplying heat energy to Pervomaysky settlement (population of 10,000 people) was shut down. The boiler is expected to re-start operating on October 30, 2006.
