EVRAZ NTMK Undergoes Environmental Audit

16 December 2019 (09:09)

UrBC, Yekaterinburg, December 16, 2019. EVRAZ Nizhniy Tagil Integrated Metallurgical Plant (EVRAZ NTMK) underwent its latest public environmental audit by Russia’s Natural Resources Ministry’s Public Council successfully, EVRAZ Holding Ural’s Corporate Communications Center reports.

‘The council’s representatives went to NTMK’s production departments and got acquainted with the best available environmental techniques the plant is using,’ the company says.

The audit is expected to result into an independent analytical report that will get presented to Russia’s Natural Resources Ministry and the general public.

Vice Chair at Russia’s Natural Resources Ministry’s Public Council Alexander Zakondyrin spoke very appreciatively of the level at which NTMK manages to launch the best available techniques.

‘Our inspection resulted in the conclusion that the idea of Nizhniy Tagil’s air being highly polluted is an exaggeration. For one, EVRAZ NTMK is the only plant using 100 out of 139 existing components of the best available environmental techniques on a full scale and using 29 techniques on a partial scale,’ Zakondyrin says.

‘Things look quite good at EVRAZ NTMK. This is a great example that could serve as a best-practice benchmark. The company has managed to bring its gross emissions down by 78% in the last thirty years. For certain emission categories, such as the foul-smelling emissions from the coke and chemical by-product process facilities, the decline was as much as 91%. You can see the plant has a consistent production upgrades program and a program to use the best available techniques and promising technologies. We have a lot of respect for the company’s management and their awareness of the need for modernization,’ says head of the Tech & Environmental Events Work Team at Russia’s Natural Resources Ministry’s Public Council Stanislav Koryakin.
