UrBC, Yekaterinburg, February 27, 2018. EVRAZ Holding’s Nizhniy Tagil Integrated Metallurgical Works (NTMK) received a thank-you letter and a memorial stele in recognition of its efforts to protect the environment and of its projects throughout the Year of The Environment in Russia/Year of Nature Reserves in Sverdlovsk Oblast,’ the holding’s press service reports.

In 2017, EVRAZ NTMK had its dry coke-quenching plant upgraded, which reduced atmospheric emissions by 20%. This was part of the plant’s four-way agreement with Russia’s Ministry for Natural Resources & The Environment, Russia’s Rosprirodnadzor, and Sverdlovsk Oblast Administration.

‘Companies keep introducing new technologies to reduce their environmental impact. Air is getting ever cleaner, and water supplied to end users is increasingly better in quality,’ says First Vice Governor of Sverdlovsk Oblast Alexei Orlov.

‘We keep on trying to bring down our environmental impact. For one, two open-hearth plants, old coke-oven batteries, and a press shop were all shut down. The plant has managed to reduce its air emissions by four times in the last decades. Up-to-date equipment replaces its older counterparts on a regular basis, and all the new units are environmentally friendly. EVRAZ NTMK has invested over RUR 8bn in environmental improvements in the last ten years,’ says the plant’s Managing Director Alexei Kushnarev.
