UrBC, Yekaterinburg, July 31, 2019. Rosatom’s/Rosenergoatom’s Beloyarskaya Nuclear Power Plant in Zarechny, Sverdlovsk Region, invested RUB 274,807,000 in environmental protection programs last year, the plant’s annual environmental report for 2018 indicates.
The presentation of the report took place in Reporters’ Club in Yekaterinburg, with a number of environmental experts, members of the Public Chamber, and reporters working for the area’s leading media all present.
Talks were given by experts from the plant’s Environmental Protection Department, Nuclear Safety & Reliability Department, and RS Department’s External Radiation Control Group.
It was stated that the nuclear plant’s share in the overall impact the local industry had on the environment came to 0.0005% in terms of production and consumption waste, to 0.06% in terms of atmospheric impact (because of the furnace oil used in the boilers that supply hot water to end users in Zarechny), and to 0% in terms of contaminated wastewater.
Beloyarskaya Nuclear Power Plant’s radiation impact currently amounts to mere basis points of the maximum permissible discharge that nuclear stations are allowed. The impact is mainly due to release of non-hazardous natural gases such as argon, krypton, and xenon. Virtually no other radionuclides get released, said Head of the RS Department’s External Radiation Control Group. Alexander Shonokhov.
Beloyarskaya Nuclear Power Plant directed RUB 274,807,000 to environmental protection programs in 2018 altogether. The programs covered radiation safety measures, collection and filtering of contaminated wastewater, repairs of filtering facilities, and so on.
