MegaFon, Rostelecom, Nokia Make First 5G Video Call

UrBC, Moscow, June 6, 2019. As the Russian market is now switching to the 5G network, MegaFon, Rostelecom, and Nokia made their first international video call within the system, MegaFon’s press service reports.

‘Russia’s first international 5G-standard video call signifies the takeoff of the practical application of new-generation mobile network throughout the country. Rostelecom’s President Mikhail Oseyevsky and Chief Technology and Innovation Officer (CTIO) at MegaFon Frederic Vanoosthuyze called President of Mobile Networks and Member of Group Leadership Team at Nokia Tommi Uitto in his Helsinki office,’ the press service says.

Another 5G call that followed at once connected a MegaFon network user and a Tele2 user, which proved that the 5G infrastructure was fully functional for multiple mobile carriers and ISPs. The call was made by MegaFon’s CTIO Frederic Vanoosthuyze and Director-General at Tele2 Sergey Emdin.

This is seen as the beginning of a true digital revolution in Russia. The first 5G call is symbolic of the technological future where Russian telecom market leaders work together to achieve digital breakthroughs and inspire life-changing transformations for the country’s new digital economy. 5G technologies are indispensable for industrial, social, and public sector innovations, Frederic Vanoosthuyze says.
