MMK Launches New Turbine Unit

14 May 2019 (09:12)

UrBC, Yekaterinburg, May 14, 2019. A new turbine unit got launched at Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) central power station. The unit comprises a steam turbine and a generator, is more powerful than its older counterpart, and will reduce the per-kW heat spending by 15%.

According to MMK’s Information & PR Department, Unit T 42/50-2.9 (power capacity: 50 MW) got manufactured at Ural Turbine Plant. The generator was made at Novosibirsk-based ELSIB Scientific & Production Association. The one-cylinder turbine is fitted with the most advanced automated control system available to date to ensure optimal settings for lower energy spending. For one, the per-kW heat spending will now go down by 15%, which will cut back on MMK’s natural gas consumption.

‘This new medium-pressure turbine is one of a kind in that completely new technologies were implemented to manufacture the unit, and many of its components only used to get installed at larger-capacity and higher-pressure turbines. This applies to the block and pressure control valves merged into a single piece, for example. This is the first time the control and protection appliances that come in a single component get installed at a turbine unit that operates at MMK’s power station,’ the company says.
