MegaFon Sets Up Base Station in Yamal Peninsula

UrBC, Yekaterinburg, April 16, 2018. MegaFon’s engineers set up the base station Vyzhivshiy (The Revenant) in Sabetta, a settlement in Yamal Peninsula, MegaFon Ural’s press service says.

The station, located on the shore of the Arctic Ocean, was named after the Leonardo DiCaprio film (where the main character survives in extreme weather conditions). Even now, when most people are enjoying the spring warmth, it still feels like 22 degrees centigrade below zero in Sabetta.

‘Sabetta is situation far up in the North. This is an extremely cold and windy place, with mountains of snow. The location and the living conditions here are similar to those shown in the Oscar-winning movie; there are some bears here as well, as a matter of fact. Now the mobile ‘Leonardo DiCaprio’ helps reporters, visitors, and settlement workers stay in touch with their families and enjoy Internet connection in a land’s end,’ says MegaFon’s Director for Network Development in Yamalo-Nenetsky Autonomous District Yakov Pakhomi.

Vyzhivshiy alone is responsible for data traffic of over 77,000 minutes a day (that is, around 7m words you can exchange with your nearest and dearest). Internet traffic is estimated at more than 63,000 Mb a day (about 20,000 high quality images).
