Movie theaters' revenues drop 35% in August

UrBC, Moscow, September 3, 2015. Russian movie theaters' ruble revenues dropped by 35% in August, with attendance down by 32% compared with a year earlier, Kommersant reports.

The revenues obtained by movie theaters in Russia and the CIS member states (excluding Ukraine) amounted to 11.7bn RUR in June-August 2015, which was 3.5% less than last summer, film distributors report. The number of movie-goers decreased by 4.8%, down to 48.7m people.

The overall decrease had to do with the disastrous August sales, when both attendance and box office plummeted by 32% and 35%, respectively. The overall revenue reached 2.8bn RUR in August 2015 against 4.1bn RUR a year earlier. Attendance dropped from 18m down to 11.7m people.

Russian movies made 30% less money in June-August than last summer. According to Movie Research, summer revenues (excluding the last week of August) amounted to 311.72m RUR against 467.31m RUR a year earlier. The number of viewers dropped from 2.31m down to 1.46m people. Attendance rate for Russian movies was 3.2% against 4.65% in June-August 2014, and their share in the overall revenue amount decreased from 3.95% to 2.84%.
