Plant 9 Chief Metallurgist is Engineer of the Year

UrBC, Nizhniy Tagil, August 10, 2015. Chief Metallurgist of Plant 9 (a member enterprise of Uralvagonzavod Corporation) Alexei Smirnov was selected as Engineer of the Year 2014 in the national contest. He was one among the contest’s fifteen finalists, the corporation’s press service reports.
Smirnov has worked at Plant 9 since 2011; he supervises all the thermal treatment departments as well as the development and introduction of progressive and competent design documentation. He is also in charge of analyzing current technological processes in order to cut down on the labor-intensity, increase labor productivity, and improve the quality of produce. Alexei Smirnov also contributes to experimental work and the project on reconstruction of the plant’s special-purpose production unit. He coordinates issues relating to technological training of staff and makes decisions as to thermal treatment of products based on the Sales Department's accompanying files.
The contest judges estimated highly both Smirnov's in-plant efforts and his journal articles as well as his book on the heat transfer properties of ferrous alloys subjected to high temperatures, co-authored with another expert. Smirnov is a postgraduate student at Mining University's Physics Department and spends his free time doing scientific research on heat transfer properties of submicro- and nano-crystalline metals and alloys subjected to high temperatures with his fellow scientists.
