UFU to make 160 faculty members redundant

UrBC, Yekaterinburg, June 2, 2015. Ural Federal University is planning to make around 160 members of teaching stuff in two of its colleges redundant, UFU lecturer and co-chair of Interregional Academics’ Trade Union Dmitri Trynov informed UrBC.

Trynov says the expected redundancies have to do with the need to convert UFU into a scientific research center.

‘We have been informed that an order to fire 91 people in Metallurgical Institute and 70 people in the Higher School of Economics & Managements has been issued. Both colleges’ directors have already asked their respective heads of chairs to decide on whom to let go,’ Trynov said.

He believes as many as 786 people will be made redundant at UFU by the end of this year. The final decision will be made at UFU Supervisory Board meeting on June 10.

‘Based on Rector Viktor Koksharov’s rhetoric, the decision has actually been made already. I believe the redundancies have financial reasons behind them: the university’s development program, which has kept us running for the last five years, hasn’t been renewed,’ he says.
