April 17, 2015. Uralvagonzavod Corporation’s head plant now manufactures the casing for RT-120, a cushioning part of a freight railway carriage.

According to the corporation’s press service, the part itself gets assembled at a certain Russian plant and then delivered to Uralvagonzavod to be mounted on the carriages.

‘RT is a Russian cushioning unit which protects both carriages and their cargo from possible damage, especially from damage that can occur during sliding and shunting operations. Making the casings for the RT-120 is a completely new direction for Uralvagonzavod. The difficulty lies in that the part doesn’t undergo any mechanical treatment and pertains to Precision Grade 10, which means the measurements have to be extremely precise. This is a high precision product that is crucial to the railway industry.

Thanks to the installation of some new equipment at the plant’s foundry department, it is now possible to meet all the precision and technological requirements for the casing. Uralvagonzavod Chief Metallurgist’s Design Office is now thinking over how to reduce the work intensity of the finishing jobs,’ the press service says.

Customers need about 5,000 RT-120 units a month; Uralvagonzavod currently has enough orders to keep it busy for the following three months. In the future, the plant expects to start making casings for cushioning unit RT-130 as well. This one is used on tank cars. The plant is now elaborating a production technology for RT-130, since this part is quite different from RT-120 in appearance and technical parameters.
