October 3, 2014. Russia Today recently broadcast a documentary called Tanks: Made in Russia that was filmed on the premises of Uralvagonzavod Corporation’s head plant in late 2013.

‘The seven-member film crew spent a month filming 24/7 to capture the real-life story of how the legendary T72 tank ties together the lives of two young plant workers. In addition to English, the film will be dubbed into Arabic and Spanish,’ the corporation’s press service says.

Throughout the film’s 12 episodes, Kirill Zhalilov and Vladimir Danilov compete for a position in the prestigious tank department where the famous combat vehicles are assembled. Kirill has just arrived at Uralvagonzavod, yet assembling tanks has been his life-long ambition. He promised to his girlfriend and wife-to-be Alyona that he would get a job in this tank department. Vladimir has been working at the plant for three years already, so he is waiting to get the position in the mechanical assembly department which he deserves. What is more, his firstborn is already on the way.

The documentary show’s producer Armand Ordyan explains the idea was to show a man of labor and his everyday working routine.

‘We wanted to do what the Soviet cinematography didn’t: we wanted to show that the person who makes these combat vehicles is a human being like the rest of us, this is someone just like our viewers, just like you and me. This is a person who wants to have a job, to feed his children, to make some money, to be loved and waited for at home, and to have a reasonable boss,’ the producer says.

The legendary T72 tank, which was dubbed ‘Vasya’ by its crew, is actually one of the main characters in the show. The tank has been through several trouble spots yet, despite the serious damage to the vehicles and the wear and tear, the crew appealed to Uralvagonzavod management to give the tank a new life. The restoration and modernization of the tank makes up a lion’s share of the film’s footage.
