Uralvagonzavod’s Stand-Alone Power Generation Unit Gets Compliance Certificate

6 August 2012 (09:37)

Vulkan 800/1500, a stand-alone power generation unit with a gas turbine engine, designed by Omsk-based machine-building design office (one of Uralvagonzavod Scientific Production Corporation’s divisions) was awarded a certificate.

Under this certificate, issued by Firma SibTechStandard, the unit meets all the requirements stated in the Electrical Installations Code and can be produced on an industrial scale.

This mini-power station Vulkan was developed by the KBTM designers on the basis of a number of nodes and technologies used in the armored vehicles production. This portable mini-power station is fully automated, fits into one transportable container, is fed diesel fuel, and is meant for the Department of Emergencies’ needs. It can be used as the source of alternative electricity and heating supply. In fact, today’s industry produced nearly no machines of such type capable of generating electric power and heat at the same time.

This mini-power station was designed by Omsk-based machine-building design bureau (KBTM) with help from Siberian Machine-Building, Progress, and EnergoComintech-Siberia. The latter’s daughter company EnergoReserve is the customer for the project.

It took twenty experienced designers from KBTM one year to complete the project. 853 drawings and almost as many new parts had to be made. High quality casting that the company offers made it possible to reduce the costs. By now, the designers have managed to make the industrial-scale production of the unit two times faster and cheaper than that of the test sample.

The mini-power station is also unique in that it is portable. The lid of the container has special rigging devices to ensure easy transportation.

The basic model working on wet fuel produces up to 80 kilowatts of electricity and up to 1,500 kilowatts of heat. The next stage is to improve the characteristics of the product to make sure it can operate on natural gas for long periods of time. This will make the station more useful in the Far North. KBTM designers have already prepared all the necessary documentation and will start working on this stage in the nearest future, Uralvagonzavod Scientific Production Corporation’s press service reports.
