EVRAZ ZSMK Commissions Advanced Geometry Tool

UrBC, Yekaterinburg, September 19, 2019. A new, advanced geometry tool got commissioned and launched at EVRAZ West Siberian Integrated Metallurgical Plant (ZSMK) Rail & Beam Department’s non-destructive testing line for 100-meter rails, EVRAZ Holding Siberia’s Corporate Communications Center reports.

The new tool controls nine parameters of the product that have to meet the GOST requirements with high precision and throughout the rail’s entire length.

‘This is a fully automated, testing error-free process. We only used to check for four parameters automatically: the rail height, the top of rail width, the rail base width, and the web gauge. The other parameters had to get checked by our quality control operators manually. The new system allows to check for the web height, the rail base blade height, the curvature of the rail base, accuracy of the running surface form, and rail asymmetry. What is more, these parameters get controlled every 25 mm throughout the rail’s entire length rather than just at the ends,’ the company says.

The new tool got certified by the state, underwent manufacturer and performance testing, and has been accepted into the Russian Railways’ Measuring Tool Register.

According to the company, non-destructive quality control is the obligatory part of the rail quality control process. EVRAZ ZSMK employs several kinds of non-destructive testing for its 100-meter rails, including checking for misalignment and the echo-shadow method and the echo-pulsed technique for internal flaw detection.
