EVRAZ ZSMK Celebrates 45th Anniversary with Special Melting Session

29 April 2019 (09:20)

UrBC, Yekaterinburg, April 29, 2019. EVRAZ Holding’s West-Siberian Metallurgical Plant’s (EVRAZ ZSMK) Converter Shop 2 got launched forty-five years ago today; to celebrate the occasion, a special steel-melting session involving Igor Korzhov’s team and a number of old-service employees who took part in the shop’s very first melting operation took place at the plant this month, EVRAZ Holding Siberia’s Corporate Communications Center reports.

There are currently two converter units (320,000 kg) operating at the shop. In 2017, one of the units got replaced with a newer version, and the other one is about to undergo similar upgrades/repairs.

In 2002, the world’s most powerful section-iron continuous casting machine got launched at the shop. There years later, Russia’s largest slab-making CC machine (capacity: 2,400,000,000 kg) started operating there as well.

EVRAZ ZSMK invested in the section-iron CC machine’s upgrades in 2016, which made it possible to use new steel-teeming methods, raise the speed of the steel-teeming process, and increase the machine’s output to 2,200,000,000 kg of cast section units a year.

The plant now makes the high-margin 150x150 mm and 150x200 mm units that enjoy very good market demand. This year, the plant started making 130x130 mm units as well.

EVRAZ ZSMK supplies its slab produce to twenty different countries, including Mexico, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan, and the Middle East. Converter Shop 2 produced its first batch of steel on April 29, 1974. Nearly 169,000,000,000 kg of steel in 400 different varieties have been produced in the forty-five years that followed.
