2 February 2018 (09:27)

UrBC, Magnitogorsk, February 2, 2018. Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) was founded eighty-six years ago today; the plant produced its first batch of pig iron on February 1, 1932, MMK Information, PR & Advertising Department reports.

‘MMK is one of Russia’s and the world’s largest metallurgical enterprises. The plant produced more than 12.8m tons of steel and over 11.3m tons of metal goods last year and 800,000,000,000 kg between 1932 and 2017, which is an absolute record for the entire national metallurgical sector,’ the Department says.

Thanks to the plant’s large-scale investments program, a number of new, up-to-date, highly efficient production facilities have been set up on the site within the last two decades. The facilities are meant for making competitive, great quality produce for both the national and the international markets. Among such facilities are, for example, the one for making heavy plates for the pipe manufacturing industry as well as for the ship-, bridge-, and machine-building sectors, and the very advanced cold roll Mill 2000 for making cold-rolled and zinc-coated automobile body sheets. MMK also put up the highly productive units for making zinc-coated and polymeric-coated rolled goods. The last such unit - Hot Dip Galvanizing Unit 3 at the plant’s Sheet-Rolling Department 11 — makes 360,000,000 kg of zinc-coated products a year; the unit was launched in July 2017.
