UrBC, Magnitogorsk, August 25, 2017. Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) invested 1.64bn RUR in construction and reconstruction of environmental facilities this year, MMK Information & PR Administration reports.
This is part of the plant’s annual environmental program designed to reduce the enterprise’s man-made impact; the program involves all of the plant’s production divisions and departments.
Most of the steps taken result in achievements comparable with the best international environmental success stories and meet all the requirements for the best green technologies available to date.
For one, MMK had Sulphur-Trapping Unit 2 at its Mining & Processing Department reconstructed this year. The reconstruction has meant all of the gases produced at Sintering Plant 2 (1.4m ncum/hr) come out 95% sulphur dioxide-free (which complies with the current EU standards) and 97% suspended substance-free.
Additionally, the plant launched its Blast Furnace 10 cast-house de-dusting system (capacity: 800,000 m3/hr). The system is meant to trap all excess dust, with an estimated drop in emissions at 320,000 kg of dust a year.
