UrBC, Yekaterinburg, January 13, 2017. EVRAZ Holding’s West-Siberian Integrated Metallurgical Works (ZSMK) won the National Environmental V.I. Vernadsky Prize, EVRAZ Holding Siberia’s press office reports.

The plant’s project on upgrading the facilities of Novokuznetsk’s primary employer won in the Urban Environment category.

‘For many years, the plant has been implementing large-scale environmental protection and conservation programs such as doing away with the obsolete facilities, switching to up-to-date equipment, and introducing new waste recycling technologies. We have a list of projects to work on through 2022,’ the press office says.

ZSMK has also been investing in production upgrades. A new rail-and-structural mill was introduced in 2013, and a coal injection unit for blast furnaces was launched a year later. The coal injection technology results in reduced amount of harmful emissions, coal-processing waste, and CO2 emissions. Also, up-to-date shielding gas units were launched at the plant last year, which means the harmful ammonia is no longer used in the production process.
