MegaFon: 18.5m Texts Sent on New Year’s Eve

10 January 2017 (09:27)

UrBC, Yekaterinburg, January 10, 2017. MegaFon’s subscribers made 12.5m phone calls and sent 18.5 texts between 6PM on December 31 and 6AM on January 1; according to the carrier’s press service, these more conventional ways to connect with others proved more popular with the Urals-based subscribers than messenger applications (some 4m messages were sent through these).

‘On this New Year’s Eve, locals spent longer on the phone with their best wishes and season’s greetings: a phone call was four minutes long on average, which is twice as long as one year previously,’ the company press service says.

Internet traffic amounted to 198,000 Gb on December 31, which roughly equals to 50m uploaded photographs or playing/streaming 29m New Year’s songs in MP3 format. Nearly a half of this traffic amount went and came through 4G networks.

‘This New Year’s Eve, we adjusted the settings to make sure the connection quality is even higher than on any other day. Our system managed these millions of phone calls and texts just fine,’ says MegaFon Ural Infrastructure Director Anton Scherbakov.
