Heavyweights to pay to use Sverdlovsk Region highways

April 10, 2015. Heavyweights that are over 12,000kg big will have to pay for using Sverdlovsk Region highways, the local government’s website states.
The new system will be enacted after the Russian Transport Ministry’s bill on changes in the Russian Federation Fiscal Code has come into effect.
‘Under the new legislation, federal constituencies are allowed to decide whether to let heavyweights use their highways if they pay a compensation for the damage their cause,’ the website states.
Sverdlovsk Region authorities are definitely going to use this option. According to Sverdlovsk Region Transport Minister Alexander Sidorenko, charging these vehicles will provide extra inflow of money into the local road fund as well as reduce the number of accidents.
