August 12, 2014. Russian Vice Premier and Chair of the Military-Industrial Committee Dmitri Rogozin got acquainted with the measures Burevestnik Scientific Research Institute (a member enterprise of Uralvagonzavod Corporation) intends to take in order to enhance its innovative potential during his business trip to Nizhniy Novgorod on August 8.

According to the corporation’s press service, during his visit to Burevestnik, Rogozin looked at samples of arms and military vehicles that were developed and are now produced by the enterprise on an industrial scale. He also got acquainted with the technical (re)conversion process and with the company’s plan on the development of artillery weapons.

The official stressed that ‘Nizhniy Novgorod-based Burevestnik has every right to be considered a trend-setter in the artillery weaponry and munitions sector. Quite a few of its products have no counterparts anywhere else in the world.’ When asked about the impact sanctions from the West might have on the enterprise, Rogozin said very little was actually imported for the defense enterprises located in Nizhniy Novgorod Region and most of them were using Russian parts and components, so the recent sanctions could not seriously affect their performance.

Russian Vice Premier explained he was primarily interested in the area’s cadre potential rather than the sanctions. Rogozin emphasized it was essential to train young staff now to provide personnel for new production facilities, which means it is necessary to set up specialized chairs in colleges, train highly skilled workers, and devise housing support programs for employees.

Valeriy Shantsev, acting Governor of Nizhniy Novgorod Region, also said a few words about the development of defense industry in the area. He pointed out that local defense enterprises had joined nine federally funded special-purpose programs. The enterprises received 6.8bn RUR last year, which was four times more than a year earlier. The median monthly pay at defense plants and institutes comes to 31,000 RUR, which is 1.5 times more than the real economy sector’s average.
