March 03, 2014. After the performance of the 4G mobile Internet connection during the Sochi Olympics has been tested by engineers from an independent body called 3Gspeed.ru, the work of MegaFon technicians was declared ‘an outstanding achievement’, while its Internet connection speed of 88 Mb per second proved a record-setting one for the Russian 4G networks. In the end, 3Gspeed.ru engineers created a mobile coverage map for Sochi, with indications as to where the super-fast 4G Internet connection is available, the company’s press service says.

3Gspeed.ru engineers used MegaFon’s 4G modem M100-2 and an Intel i7 laptop to do over 700 measurements of the mobile Internet connection speed in the Greater Sochi area. The project team is not using any special equipment apart from the laptops and the 4G modems to make sure the results of the measurements are as close to life as possible. MegaFon’s 4G network was tested along the most popular supporter routes, including the Olympic Park and Lastochka express train. The maximum speed of 88.7 Mb per second was detected in Pribrezhny Olympic Cluster. On average, the speed of 4G connection in Sochi was 17 Mb per second. In the end, 3GSpeed engineers designed a 4G measurements map: http://sochi4g.3gspeed.ru.

‘Sochi can now be called the Olympic Capital for a reason. MegaFon’s 4G network offered amazing connection quality. 17Mb per second under the circumstances when an enormous number of users are gathered together in one place is definitely an outstanding achievement of the mobile carrier’s technicians. Especially if you consider the fact that all the measurements were taken in motion, including the express train. The peak figure of 88 Mb per second that was registered outside a lab and in field conditions is actually a record for the Russian 4G networks,’ says 3Gspeed.ru Technical Director Alexei Bichuk.
