MMK improves on energy efficiency
7 August 2013 (10:21)
August 7, 2013. Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) came up with a report on the projects it implemented that were aimed at decreasing the company's energy spending at MMK Group's enterprises and divisions in the first half of 2013.
The events were targeted at saving energy, electric power, fuel, drinking and manufacturing water, heating energy, and air separation products, the company reports. The measures taken in the first half of 2013 (including replacing the energy-intensive equipment and improving the performance of the appliances used) 3.7 million kilowatt-hours of electric p[ower alone were saved. This amounts to more than 9m RUR in monetary terms. What is more, the energy-saving measures at MMK in the first half of 2013 are expected to result in more than 2,700,000 kg worth of saved fuel and nearly 8,000 gigacalories worth of saved heating energy by the end of the year. The heating energy savings are already three times bigger than in the first half of 2012. Most of these saving measures were implemented in the electric steel-smelting shop and the coatings department.
In addition, the savings program let the company save 1.5m m3 of pressurized air and air separation products: this is five times more than a year earlier. This result was mainly due to replacing some sections of the pressurized air pipelines. Besides, 250,000 m3 of manufacturing water and 8,300 m3 of drinking water were saved in the six months of 2013.
