Pervouralsk New Pipe Plant Makes Wire for Nuclear Industry

9 July 2012 (09:13)

Pervouralsk New Pipe Plant (a part of ChTPZ Group) now makes spacing wire with enhanced characteristics from chromium/nickel EK 164 steel for the nuclear industry, ChTPZ press service reports.

The technology for the production of spacing wire that ChTPZ devised is unique, has no counterparts in Russia, and has eight Russian Federation patents. Pervouralsk New Pipe Plant is the exclusive supplier of round and oval-shaped wire; this used to be made from ChS 68 steel before, but, given the nuclear industry’s needs, ChTPZ Group has mastered the production of such wire from EK 164 steel.

Both types of wire are meant for spacing fuel rods in the nuclear reactors. The new metal is very resistant to aggressive environments, which improves its operational characteristics considerably. Every year, the nuclear industry needs over 150,000 meters of such wire. To date, Pervouralsk New Pipe Plant has manufactured 12,500 meters.

For many years, the nuclear industry has been one of Chelyabinsk Tube Rolling Plant and Pervouralsk New Pipe Plant’s key consumers. In 2011, ChTPZ Group’s pipe-making plants shipped about 1,000 tons of special kinds of pipes for the nuclear industry’s needs. ChTPZ Group was the only Russian pipe manufacturer to receive the Conscientious Nuclear Industry Supplier Diploma at the forum for the nuclear industry suppliers ATOMEX 2011.
