Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) intends to direct 900m RUR to environmental projects this year, MMK reports.

The company adopted an environmental program for 2012 in order to comply with the Russian Federation’s legislative requirements in the field of environmental protection and with the international standard ISO 14001:2004. The program is also targeted at reducing MMK’s environmental impact and enhancing the environmental friendliness of the company’s production process.

MMK’s environmental program for this year covers all of the company’s divisions. Among the most important measures aimed at reducing the amount of harmful atmospheric emission are: the reconstruction of sulphur-trapping facilities in the sintering plant; the repairs of the coke gas final cooling cycle in the coke department; and the construction of aspirating systems within the new cold-roll facility at sheet-rolling shop 11.

The company expects to spend nearly 565m RUR on these and other emission-reducing projects. As a result, the emissions are expected to drop by 160 tons by the end of the year.

Another 220m RUR will be directed to cutting down on water use and reducing the amount of pollutants dumped in the water. The key projects hear are the construction of a neutralization station at sheet-rolling shop 11, the completion of the circulation water supply system and water-filtering units renovations, and an overhaul of the lubricating/cooling fluid disintegration unit at sheet-rolling shop 5. This will result in a 2,250 cubic meters per hour reduction in the amount of manufacturing water consumption, in a 1,660 tons a year drop in the amount of suspended material dumped, and in a 220 tons a year decline in the amount of mineral products dumped. What is more, all these will prevent the dumping of 250 cubic meters per hour worth of contaminated waste water from the newly built facilities at sheet-rolling shop 11.

In addition to this, MMK’s environmental program for 2012 provides for the recycling of 11m tons of slag in order to obtain metal stuffs and for the reclamation of about thirty hectares of land. The company will spend a total of about 900m RUR on its environmental projects this year.
