Evraz Group investigates accident at West Siberian Iron & Steel Plant

9 February 2010 (10:43)

Evraz Group is now looking into the reasons for a recent emergency at West Siberian Iron & Steel Plant that left three people injured.

A small explosion with a splash of hot iron occurred at the plant’s oxygen converter shop 1 at 10:24 AM on February 8, 2010. Three workers were injured as a result.

The rescue teams and the company’s management arrived at the scene at once and took all the measures necessary to cope with the problem.

‘According to our preliminary data, all the operations involving the converter in question (that is, the warm-up, the charge of the furnace with scrap metal, and the iron pouring) were carried out in strict accordance with the technological requirements,’ Evraz Group’s press center reports.

The converter has already been halted for repairs. An ad hoc committee was set up to conduct a preliminary investigation.

As a matter of fact, this is not the first time an accident has occurred at Evraz Group’s Sverdlovsk Region-based enterprises. For one, a massive explosion killed nine people at Nizhniy Tagil-based Yestyuninskaya mine on December 23, 2009.
