MMK to Present Innovative Cryogenic Steels at Innoprom
9 July 2019 (12:16)
UrBC, Magnitogorsk, July 9, 2019. Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) is taking part in the international industrial exhibition Innoprom 2019 in Yekaterinburg this week, the company’s Information & PR Department reports.
The plant intends to present its technology for making rolled metal goods from ON9 cryogenic structural steel at the exhibition; the technology was developed at MMK last year, while the steel variety is used extensively for production, storage, and transportation of liquefied/compressed natural gas.
In terms of their cryogenic performance, ON9 steels are fully comparable with the austenite class (stainless) kinds. ON9 is both stronger and cheaper than its counterparts, which ensures its popularity with customers in the cryogenic equipment sector and in the field for transportation, use, and storage of liquefied/compressed natural gas. The steel’s performance parameters have been checked and confirmed through special tests. MMK is also willing to do further tests on the rolled metal goods made from ON9 steel to see how well they perform in cryogenic environments and resist corrosion.
Increasingly more large Russian oil and gas companies are growing interested in the liquefied natural gas technology; the hard part is that the equipment used to transport and store LNG (tanks, pipelines, and so on) must stay functional in extremely low temperatures (up to 200 degrees centigrade below zero). The suitable appliances mostly need to get imported from abroad for the time being, which is why MMK’s ON9 steel actually serves as an import substitution item. The steel’s foreign counterparts are X8Ni9+NT640, X8Ni9+QT640, and X8Ni9+QT680 (according to TU 14-101-1082-2016); X7Ni9 (according to EN 10028-4); A353 (according to ASTM A353/A353M); A553 TYPE I (according to ASTM A553/A553M); and SL9N520NNT and SL9N590Q (according to JIS G 3127).
The 10th international industrial exhibition Innoprom 2019 is taking place in Yekaterinburg EXPO on July 8-10.
