SverdlNIIkhimmash Gets Radioactive Waste Treatment Patent
3 July 2017 (12:10)
UrBC, Yekaterinburg, July 3, 2017. Rosatom-Energomash’s Yekaterinburg-based asset SverdlNIIkhimmash was recently issued a patent for its small-scale radioactive waste vitrification furnace, the company press service reports.
The furnace is a key part of waste vitrification and disposal process. The new make differs from its earlier counterparts in that it is smaller in size, has a stationary cooling system, and has the heated water fed into it through a movable platform in the lower part of the structure. This was all made possible due to a thinner insulation layer, a wider outer surface to ensure better cooling, and a stationary cooling unit.
One advantage of launching the new furnace lies in the fact that both its parts and the entire furnace itself can get easily replaced right within the nuclear power stations’ hot cells.
