Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3+6, Ford Focus get stolen most often in Sverdlovsk Region

April 3, 2015. 400 cars were stolen in Sverdlovsk Region in the first three months of the year: this was five cars less than in the first quarter of 2014. 170 out of these 400 automobiles couldn’t be found and returned to their owners, Deputy Head of Sverdlovsk Region division of the Internal Affairs Ministry’s Criminal Investigation Department Natig Bairamov announced at a press conference.

According to Bairamov, cars in the medium price range (600,000 RUR to 800,000 RUR) are stolen most often. The three most frequently stolen brands are Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3 and 6, and Ford Focus. Also, more Renault Sanderos and Logans get stolen these days than before. Around a third of stolen cars were Russian brands.

‘Expensive cars aren’t very popular right now. The ones that do get stolen are Land Cruiser and Infiniti, but these cases are rare,’ Bairamov said.

According to the official, unwatched parking lots next to apartment buildings are the most typical stealing locations. Additionally for Yekaterinburg, the number of instances when things get stolen from inside an automobile rose by 10% for the first time in a few years.

The police recently uncovered two organized crime groups involved in car theft. One of the groups focused on stealing Russian cars and stole 23 automobiles all in all. The other one was mainly interested in Chevrolet Cruze makes and stole 28 such cars altogether.
