FAS lets dairy company buy shareholding

Russia’s Federal Antimonopoly Service received a petition from the American company PepsiCo regarding the possible acquisition of Wimm Bill Dann Foods, a Russian dairy foods manufacturer, RIA Novosti quotes FAS’s deputy head Andrei Tsyganov as reporting. The news of the upcoming transaction was announced on December 2, 2010. The company will probably be sold for $5.8bn. PepsiCo intends to buy a 66% shareholding in Wimm Bill Dann for $3.8bn first and will launch an offer for the acquisition of the remaining shares later. The Russian Government issued a provision that makes it obligatory for grocery stores to display regular dairy foods and surrogate ones containing dairy fat substitutes on separate shelves; the document is now available on the Cabinet’s website. Sverdlovsk Region division of Rospotrebnadzor (the state-run consumer rights watchdog) inspected 35,000 kg of dairy foods in the first six months of 2018, finding 2,600 kg (7.4%) faulty, the agency’s press service reports. The problems uncovered were the same as usual: failure to comply with the normative requirements, technical regulations on the foods’ quality, and adulteration issues. Yekaterinburg Dairy Plant No. 1 will probably be converted into a Danone yoghurt and dairy products plant, Prime Agency reports. In fact, Unimilk Company (a member of Danone Unimilk Group) bought a 100% shareholding in Yekaterinburg Dairy Plant No.1 earlier, the company explains. Danone is also planning to increase the plant’s baby food output.

The Federal Antimonopoly Service started an investigation of the state of affairs at the country’s dairy market. The spokesperson for the Service reports that Russia’s six largest milk and dairy products makers (UNIMILK, Campina, Wimm Bill Dann, DANONE, Ehrmann, and Parmalat), whose joint share of the Russian market comes to more than 60%, were requested to provide the authorities with data on their production and sales volumes, their transfer prices, prime costs and profitability over the last two years. The Federal Antimonopoly Service is going to use these data to decide whether these
