The report on the state of the environment and the way environmental factors affect the health of Sverdlovsk Region population indicates that Sredneuralsky Copper Smelting Plant (part of Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company (UMMC)) is one of the major waste producers among the non-ferrous metallurgical enterprises of Sverdlovsk Region. It has already produced 1,671,200 tons of waste, but only 1,085,700 tons have been recycled. The plant has collected 61,533,100 tons by the end of 2006.

According to the recent preliminary estimates, Sverdlovsk Region’s enterprises produced about 172,889,600 tons of waste last year, while the amount of recycled waste came to 71,444,500 tons, the report on the region’s environmental status in 2010 says. The company that was responsible for most of the waste was OAO Vanadium Kachkanar Ore Mining & Processing Enterprise. In 2010, the company produced 45,974,000 tons of waste and recycled 6,485,600 tons. Ural Asbestos Ore Mining & Processing Enterprise, with its 36,401,000 tons of manufactured waste and 17,961,700 tons of recycled waste,

The company produced 3,808,900 tons of waste, but only 1,247,300 tons were recycled. The manufacturing waters dumped by the non-ferrous metallurgical companies are polluted with toxic mineral substances and reagents as well as heavy metal salts, arsenic, tungsten, stibium, sulphates, chlorides, etc.
