Eight historic buildings pulled down in Yekaterinburg in 2004-2006

Metalline Ltd. pulled down the so called E. I. Schevkunova house located at 51 Rosa Luxemburg St. This was a historic building dating back to the first half of the nineteenth century. The house was originally rented by Metalline Ltd., but it had already been completely demolished by January 13, 2004, reports Sverdlovsk Region Cultural Heritage Protection Center.

‘The country’s cultural heritage (that is, historic buildings) are now being haggled over. These buildings are simply used as a trump card in all sorts of economic games. Paris, for instance, has got about a hundred such buildings, whereas in Sverdlovsk Region, there are 1,200 of them. Tenants and owners of several scores of buildings and other facilities on Yekaterinbnurg's cultural heritage list dismantled a number of outdoor advertising media from these buildings after they had been ordered to do so by the authorities, Sverdlovsk Region Public Property Management Ministry's press service reports. ‘Twenty-one business centers with total area of 149,000 square meters were built in Yekaterinburg in 2006,’ expert of the local Commodities Market Committee Natalia Rayskaya announced at a recent meeting. This year, 169,000 square meters of office space are to be introduced. Still, the current shortage comes to approximately 1.1m square meters at the moment. In addition to the business centers, forty-seven consumer service facilities with total area of 80,000 square meters were put up in Yekaterinburg in 2006.
