Pervouralsk New Pipe Plant (part of ChTPZ Group) started the environmental monitoring project in Pervouralsk. The company’s press officer reports this local environmental monitoring is part of the company’s conservation program developed by both the plant’s experts and independent consultants such as the British Atkins.

The project is targeted at evaluating the impact the plant and the future electric furnace steelmaking facility are going to make on the local environment and will take about two years to get accomplished. This monitoring is believed to provide reliable data on the state of the environment before and after the facility is launched. The practical goal of the project is to get the data needed to locate the borders of the sanitary protective area and to introduce appropriate environmental protection measures.

Sergey Kuzmin, Director of Yekaterinburg Medical Center for Protection of Industrial Workers’ Health, says that firstly, all the sanitary, hygienic, and environmental data are to be officially filed, the gauging covers taking air pollution and noise level samples from six different places including ten parameters as well as taking samples of waste water and ground water using 40 parameters, doing a detailed biochemical analysis of the local soil, and gauging the level of the electromagnetic field. Then, as soon as the electric furnace steelmaking facility has been launched, compliance with the maximum admissible discharge quotas will be controlled and gauged right at the emission points using stationary meters.

Pervouralsk environmental NGO is planning to provide all the city dwellers with information on the results of the monitoring and to process their queries.
