Sverdlovsk Region Not Among Russia’s Top 30 Middle Class Constituencies

UrBC, Yekaterinburg, August 13, 2019. Sverdlovsk Region came 34th in the national rating of Russian constituencies in terms of the size of its middle class segment of the population: only 12.4% of Sverdlovsk Region’s residents are middle class, RIA Rating states.

In Russia on the whole, 14.2% of people belong to the middle class segment.

Yamalo-Nenetsky Autonomous Region came No.1 in the rating (45% of locals are middle class), Magadan Region (34.5%), Chukotsky Autonomous Region (33.8%), Khanty-Mansiysky Autonomous Region (32%), and Nenetsky Autonomous Region (29%).

The Russian constituencies of the Northern Caucasus — Ingushetia (1.9%), Chechnya (2.5%%), Dagestan (2.9%), Kabardino-Balkaria (4.1%), and Karachay-Cherkessia (4.4%) were given the lowest five positions in the rating.

The rating was based on Rosstat’s data. Families that 1) can afford to buy an automobile and an apartment big enough for their family size and 2) have at least two minimum wages (local standard) per capita a month at their disposal after all the loan and mortgage payments have been made qualified as middle class. The rating involved households where at least one family member was in gainful employment.
