Number of Russian Travelers Abroad Drops 28%

UrBC, Moscow, September 13, 2016. The number of Russians traveling abroad in the first half of 2016 dropped by 28% compared with one year earlier, TASS refers to Russian Union of Travel Industry’s press secretary Irina Tyurina as saying.

‘The overall picture looks quite interesting: 3,970,500 trips were made abroad between January and June 2016, which signifies a 28% decline,’ Tyurina said.

According to Tyurina, ‘the decrease obviously has to do with the unavailability of last year’s most popular destinations, Egypt and Turkey.’

‘No other beach holiday locations could make up for the 1,054,600 Egyptian and 1,031,500 Turkish trips. Still, some of the tourists who used to spend their summers in Egypt and Turkey went to new seaside resorts this year,’ she said.

The increase in the number of Russian travelers was most noticeable in Tunisia (up over 600% on last year’s figures), Jordan (+544%), Morocco (up nearly 300%), the Dominican Republic (+167%), and Georgia (+118).
