MMK Improves Quality of Tin Plate

1 August 2012 (18:02)

A tension-leveling machine was launched in the test mode at Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) coatings shop.

The machine was installed within the tin plating line. The unit is mainly meant for improving the final flat surface accuracy of tin plate. MMK is now Russia’s only producer of this kind of produce. Tin plate is mostly used for food packaging, for example, tinned food. The Russian market’s capacity is estimated at about 300,000 tons a year, of which at least 50% is produced by MMK. Over the last few years, some new, highly productive tin lines capable of making up to 1,200 tins a minute have been launched in Russia. To reach this productivity rate, the flat surface accuracy of MMK’s tin plate must reach the global standards.

In 2010, a contract was signed with the Italian company Danieli for the delivery of all the equipment relating to the tension-leveling machine. The unit’s capacity comes to 15,000 tons a month (which is the full volume of the tin plate produced at the coatings shop). The company reports the tension-leveling machine makes it possible greatly to improve the quality of produce and reduce the unevenness of the surface from the old GOST 13345-85 standard-prescribed 5mm down to 1.5-2mm. In this respect, the new produce will fully meet all the European requirements.
