MMK Turns 88

3.02.2020
UrBC, Magnitogorsk, February 3, 2020. Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) was founded 88 years ago on February 1, the company’s Information & PR Department reports.

‘The plant’s first blast furnace produced its first batch of cast-iron on February 1, 1932. This was the day the enterprise was born. The following year (July 1933) the plant’s first open-hearth furnace got launched as well, and once Section Mill 500 started operating in August 1934, MMK turned into a full-metallurgical-cycle enterprise processing 25% of all of the iron ore made in the USSR, as well as 12% of pig iron and about 10% of steel sheets,’ the company says.

in 2015, the company adopted a ten-year strategy for the next decade, prioritizing customer interaction and business operational and functional efficiency enhancement. There’s a focus on making the business even more stable and sustainable through better industrial safety, personnel training, and stronger partnership ties in Chelyabinsk Region and the rest of the Urals.

As for MMK’s investment program, the better part of the funds gets directed to upgrading the first-level processing facilities, which will keep bringing down the prime cost while simultaneously increasing the product quality and will drastically reduce the plant’s environmental impact as well. The company’s Clean City Initiative means more than RUB 38m will have been invested in green projects by 2025 in order to bring Magnitogorsk’s air pollution index down to 5 (which would qualify as a ‘clean city’).

MMK launched an up-to-date Sintering Plant 5 (capacity: 5,500,000,000 kg of sinter a year) in July 2019 as part of the sintering/coking/blast-furnace facilities upgrades program. This means the obsolete Sintering Plant 4 could finally get shut down. The plan is to build and commission new Coke-Oven Battery 12 and new Blast Furnace 11 within the next few years. This means the five obsolete coke-oven batteries and the three old blast furnaces will be shut down as well.
