MMK’s Environmental Projects Improve Air Quality In Magnitogorsk

7.11.2019
UrBC, Magnitogorsk, November 7, 2019. A series of environmental projects implemented by Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) made Magnitogorsk air two times cleaner than before, MMK’s Information & PR Department reports.

According to the company, the town’s air pollution figures are currently at their all-time low, which is confirmed by data from both the plant’s air monitoring stations and those belonging to Rosgridomet. MMK has invested more than RUB 21bn in green projects since 2017.

The company implemented a whole range of environmental projects to bring the air pollution levels down. For one, MMK launched new, environmentally friendly Sintering Plant 5 in July 2019, which cost RUB 30bn and cut the plant’s dust emissions by 2,100,00 kg a year, or by 50%, sulphur dioxide emissions by 3,500,000 kg a year, or by 75%, and benzopyrene emissions by 16 times.

Next, the plant put up new dust-suction systems at casting beds of Blast Furnaces 9, 10, and 1 in 2017-2018, which reduced the dust emissions by 1,140,000 kg a year all in all. Additionally, MMK reconstructed the sulphur-trapping facilities at its Sintering Department to ensure 95% air filtering efficiency. This cost the company RUB 3.5bn in investments.

Finally, the environmental situation got better thanks to the program to reduce the dust and gas emissions at the plant’s coke and by-product process facilities: the amount of benzopyrene in Magnitogorsk air has gone down by 22% in the nine months of 2019.
