Beloyarskaya Nuclear Power Plant To Join IAEA OSART in 2021

15.03.2019
UrBC, Yekaterinburg, March 15, 2019. Over a hundred managers and experts at Beloyarskaya Nuclear Power Plant took part in the International Atomic Energy Agency’s seminar on Operational Safety Review Team (OSART) program, the plant’s press service reports.

The seminar on OSART methodology was coordinated in Zarechny by the IAEA’s Peter Tarren, who talked about the OSART procedure and the guidelines for nuclear site inspections.

Beloyarskaya Nuclear Power Plant is now scheduled to undergo the review in 2021. This is one of the programs the IAEA coordinates in order to assess nuclear industry enterprises in terms of compliance with international norms and requirements, to identify the nuclear plants’ strengths that can prove useful to other nuclear enterprises and regulatory bodies, and to look into the areas that might need improvement for greater operational safety.

‘Safety is the utmost priority in each and every aspect of Beloyarskaya’s performance. The nuclear plant ensures cost-efficient generation and reliable supply of electric and heating power to users and complies with all the safety requirements one hundred percent. The plant runs two active power generating units (BN 600 Reactor Unit 3 and BN 800 Reactor Unit 4) whose total capacity comes to about 15% of all the capacities of Sverdlovsk Region’s power stations combined,’ the press service says.

OSART is one of the IAEA’s oldest missions that is globally acknowledged as a powerful mechanism to get an independent assessment of a nuclear station’s safety. The mission aims to help make nuclear power plants even safer through experience-sharing and promotion of best practices.
