UrBC, Magnitogorsk, July 10, 2018. Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) steel-smelting facility was set up eighty-five years ago this month, the companys Information & PR Department reports.

The plants first open-hearth furnace produced its very first batch of steel on July 8, 1933. This marked the beginning of MMKs steel-smelting plant that came to play a big part in the companys history and also added quite a few glorious pages to the entire countrys chronicles, MMK says.

MMKs steel was used for construction projects of the first Soviet five-year plans, for making shells and tanks during the war, and for the national economy restoration projects in the aftermath. By the end of the eighties, three open-hearth furnace departments were operating at MMK, with thirty-five furnaces all in all. The plant was producing as much as 16,000,000,000 kg of steel a year at that time. The overall production output since 1933 is estimated at more than 800,000,000,000 kg.
