UBRD customers mostly use bank cards at supermarkets and cafes

15.07.2015
UrBC, Yekaterinburg, July 15, 2015. Most of bank transactions made by the Ural Bank for Reconstruction & Development’s cardholders occur at supermarkets, cafes, and restaurants, the bank’s press service reports.

As of July 1, 2015, payments for supermarket shopping amounted to 60% of all the cashless transactions in the second quarter of the year (up 3% on a year earlier). Remarkably, every one in ten transactions were made at Monetka supermarket chain. Such chains as Kirovsky, Magnet, Krasnoye I Beloye, and Pyaterochka were also on top of the list. Megamart used to be among the top five supermarket chains but was replaced by Pyaterochka this year.

The average purchase size went down from 527 RUR by nearly 100 RUR for the UBRD cardholders. At the same time, the number of transactions per customer rose considerably: cardholders used to make 3.38 transactions (total amount 1,785 RUR) per month a year ago; now they make 6.55 transactions (total amount 2,840 RUR).

The bank’s Product Budgeting Director Vladimir Altakh says the drop in the average purchase size means the customers’ payment habits are changing.

‘People used to pay for small purchases in cash but now they prefer paying by credit/debit card. The increase in the number of shops and other businesses with POS terminals is naturally a factor in this,’ Altakh says.

The UBRD experts report on the growing popularity of using bank cards at cafes and restaurants. The share of such transactions went up from 7.1% to 9.9%. In the second quarter of the year, the bank’s cardholders used their cards at McDonald’s, Subway, Pizza Mia, Jonjoli, and Vilka-Lozhka most often.
