Yekaterinburg police look for man with 300,000 RUR worth obtained through identity theft

February 11, 2014. Yekaterinburg police are now looking for a man who used another person's passport to take out 294,000 RUR worth of loans from a bank and decided not to pay them off. Criminal action was taken, with charges of fraud, so the suspect could face up to two years in prison, says the Russian Internal Affairs Ministry's Main Administration in Sverdlovsk Region's press service.

According to the investigative team, the man inserted his photograph into somebody else's passport and used it to take out loans in five local banks, using one the same scheme every time.
'One of the incidents occurred on July 31, 2013, when the alleged offender managed to obtain 294,000 RUR', the press service's message states.

Later on, no payments came in on the loans, and the man whose passport had been used to get the loans started getting phone calls. The man went to the police and explained that his passport had been lost on July 17, 2013, and an application to this extent was submitted to the local division of Russia's Federal Migration Service immediately.

On January 14, the inquest department of Yekaterinburg division of the Russian Internal Affairs Ministry instituted criminal proceedings on the case, with charges based on part 1 of the Russian Federation Criminal Code's Article on Fraud which sets out that the punishment could measure to up to two years in prison. The police are now looking for the suspect and are asking the locals who have any information to share for their cooperation.
